Mental Health - 3x Depression

Stress itself can increase inflammation that affects our gut ecosystem and ultimately, our mood.

The Connection between Mood
Imbalance & Digestive Issues

If you or someone you love has suffered from depression or anxiety, it can be pretty clear that there are many other real symptoms associated with mood disorders such as chronic pain and digestive issues.

When it comes to the gut, people with depression or anxiety often suffer from appetite disturbances, metabolic changes, gastrointestinal disorders, and other unwelcome changes in their gut microbiome.

Nearly 40% of adults suffer from a functional gastrointestinal disorder.

The Gut-brain Axis

Our actual brain controls most of the functions in our body by sending direct messages via our central nervous system (CNS) to many of our organs and limbs. The CNS is made of an intricate system of nerves that travel down our spine and branch out through our entire body.

But your gut has a mind of its own, made up of its very own nervous system called the enteric nervous system (ENS). Scientists often refer to this as our “second brain.” This system is in constant communication with our CNS, sending messages back and forth.

Many of these conversations consist of cognitive and emotional messages being transmitted back and forth. That’s why when you’ve misplaced your wallet or your keys, you might feel a sense of anxiety that branches straight down into your gut.

Scientists have mounting evidence that microbial activity can also:

  • affect hormone signaling

  • alter our intestinal permeability (i.e. cause leaky gut)

  • produce many metabolites helpful – or harmful – to our body

  • affect our immune system (70% of our immune system is housed in the walls of our gut microbiome).

Direct changes in gut health can influence our behavior [and vice versa, as well], and cause changes in our mood.

Gut Dysbiosis:
How It Affects Our Mood

When we experience a wave of inflammation in our gut, most health specialists immediately think of one thing: gut dysbiosis. Gut dysbiosis has been shown to produce a significant immune response, causing high levels of inflammation that often overflow into other areas of the body.

As inflammation levels reach the central nervous system, they can interfere with signals being sent to the brain and induce psychological distress.

Reducing the inflammation being produced in the gut can improve its hold over our central nervous system, all by stabilizing your gut ecosystem.

The Leaky Gut Connection to Mood Imbalance

Studies show that leaky gut signs have been linked to mood imbalances such as depression and anxiety. The inflammation response that your body sends out due to the leakage results in a variety of neurocognitive disorders. Your brain is triggered to release pro-inflammation cytokines and other chemicals that can lead to depression if allowed to flood the body and the brain.

How Viome Can Help

Optimize Your Gut Health, Boost Diversity, and Lower Inflammation With Nutrition Customized For You

Many popular diets– including many foods in the American diet – are high in refined sugars and processed foods that can destroy normal gut microbiota and increase your risk for mood disorders. In many cases, though, just reducing your intake of these foods can seem to help but isn’t enough.

If your gut microbiome has trouble with foods most people define as “healthy”, you may also not find any resolution to your symptoms. Even foods like spinach, kale, or fermented foods that are often associated with a healthy gut may not be good for your gut right now and do more harm than good.

The Best Supplements and Probiotics for Depression

Anxious feelings, constantly feeling depressed, and many other symptoms related to your mood you may experience as a result of gut dysbiosis or inflammation can often be a sign from your body that something is wrong, similar to how a car uses a “check engine” light.

When it comes to supplements and probiotics, more isn’t necessarily better.

There are no universal healthy supplements or probiotics. Taking just any supplement or probiotic for a symptom could be about as helpful as taking medication without knowing why. Like everything else you consume, all supplements (for any purpose) must be digested and broken down and absorbed. How well any supplement does depends upon the health of your intestinal tract, including the microbial richness and diversity of your gut microbiome. In order to know what your body needs, it’s important to look under the hood and get to the root of the problem.

Precision nutrition is the key to health and longevity

We believe it’s nutrition – as it pertains to your unique body – that is the key to the prevention and reversal of chronic inflammation and ultimately, chronic diseases like depression.

What does the gut-brain axis do?

Card before icon

The gut-brain axis is bidirectional link between the central nervous system and the enteric nervous system (a mostly autonomous part of the nervous system that can control gastrointestinal behaviour independently of the central nervous system and includes neural circuits that control motor functions, local blood flow, mucosal transport and secretions), meaning messages and signals are sent both from the gut to the brain via the vagus nerve, and from the brain to the gut. That means, your gut microbes might be telling your brain what to eat, but your brain is also telling your gut when to start digesting and how quickly it occurs. But it's more complex. We are becoming more and more aware that your gut microbiome plays a pivotal role in brain development and brain functions. It is closely tied to mental health, and mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.

Can supplements help with depression and anxiety?

Card before icon

Studies have shown that adequate levels of certain vitamins are essential for optimal physiological and neurological functioning. Vitamins and essential minerals are constantly utilized by the body in producing energy to keep your systems operating. They support the physical and cognitive capabilities that make life both possible and enjoyable. Getting the proper nutrition can help you improve your gut health, which has been shown to affect mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression.

Can probiotics help with depression and anxiety?

Card before icon

While the affects of probiotics on mental health is still being studied, recent research has shown that probiotic supplements may help ease depression symptoms for some people. Probiotics have the ability to restore normal microbial balance, and therefore potentially play a role in the treating and preventing anxiety and depression.

Is gut health tied to anxiety?

Card before icon

Even though gut health in relation to anxiety is still under research, increasing evidence has associated gut microbiota to gastrointestinal conditions, like dysbiosis and inflammation. Dysbiosis and inflammation of the gut have been linked to causing mental illnesses such as depression.
