Our actual brain controls most of the functions in our body by sending direct messages via our central nervous system (CNS) to many of our organs and limbs. The CNS is made of an intricate system of nerves that travel down our spine and branch out through our entire body.

What does the gut-brain axis do?

The gut-brain axis is bidirectional link between the central nervous system and the enteric nervous system (a mostly autonomous part of the nervous system that can control gastrointestinal behaviour independently of the central nervous system and includes neural circuits that control motor functions, local blood flow, mucosal transport and secretions), meaning messages and signals are sent both from the gut to the brain via the vagus nerve, and from the brain to the gut. That means, your gut microbes might be telling your brain what to eat, but your brain is also telling your gut when to start digesting and how quickly it occurs. But it's more complex. We are becoming more and more aware that your gut microbiome plays a pivotal role in brain development and brain functions. It is closely tied to mental health, and mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety.
